I’ve been involved in natural wellness for many years, and I can guarantee that building a career with essential oils was not something I’d ever considered. I have a BA in English Literature, did grad work in child assessment and counselling, and I trained in midwifery. Most importantly, I’d already created a thriving, long-term career as a chiropractor when I plunged into the essential oil world.
I’d already invested my heart and soul (not to mention 15+ years!) into a successful profession that I loved. Why would I want to pursue anything else?
Sometimes, when life gets complicated, the solutions come from unexpected places!
While I loved my work as a chiropractor, I was craving more flexibility and freedom in my life, more play and pleasure and sense of ease. I wanted more time with my kids, and more time for myself. I found myself tethered to my office, and began to wonder what it would feel like to be location-independent–to work from any beach in the world!
Rather suddenly, I found myself facing some heavy and stressful times in my life. The emotional toll of juggling my chiropractic practice, the needs of my growing children, and my own needs as a single parent was feeling overwhelming.
Then, as I like to say, dōTERRA found me.
I started off by simply opening a wholesale account. I had always raised my kids with natural wellness options, and I thought that dōTERRA essential oils would be another tool in my healthcare toolbox.
Within one month of using oils with my kids for everything under the sun–from tummy aches to skinned knees to a springtime cold–I had fallen in love with the oils.
Using my essential oils regularly also became an easy and intuitive way for me to process my emotions and find perspective during this vulnerable time in my life.
My girlfriend who had introduced me to dōTERRA shared with me that there was a real and viable opportunity to earn money with the company, and I decided to give it a try.
Let me tell you, my “little oil business” took on a life of its own!
Now, it could have been bad timing for me to leap into a whole new business venture when I was already swimming in a sea of change…but it turned out to have the opposite effect!
I taught a lot of classes, and my business grew very quickly right from the beginning.
Interestingly, focusing on my dōTERRA business provided me with a positive focal point, a “divine distraction” from all the upheaval–and it paid back in more ways than one!

When I worked in the birth world and as a chiropractor, my schedule was always very full and very tight – everything had to be scheduled in advance.
Here’s the thing, though. Life won’t always comply with the schedules you set.
In September 2017, as I was about to fly to Utah for the yearly dōTERRA convention, I got a call that threw my world into a tailspin. My father, who was on vacation in California, had fallen and broken his hip–and was in hospital awaiting surgery. In the week that followed, I found myself on five different flights. In between, I was tied to the phone for hours each day, navigating my father’s care.
If I had still been working in my chiropractic practice when that incident happened, I would have lost thousands of dollars in cancelled appointments, not to mention having some very frustrated patients.
However, the beauty of my dōTERRA business meant that while I had to reschedule a few calls and meetings…I still had money coming in. It meant that I was able to afford all of those flights and hotel stays. My business was working for me, instead of needing to trade my time for every dollar I earned.
I would not have been able to handle that situation gracefully–neither time-wise nor money-wise–if it hadn’t been for my dōTERRA business and the flexibility that it affords me.
After that, I realized that both my beloved essential oils AND my business have been equally helpful to me during some of the most difficult times in my life.
